Major
A defined sequence of subjects chosen to provide depth of study within a specific subject area. See also Minor.

Major Change to a Course
Any of the following changes to a program, where 'program' is defined as a Course, Stream, Major, or Specialisation.
• changing the name of a program;
• changing the length of a program;
• changing the entry requirements for a program;
• introduction of a new stream, major or specialisation within a course;
• changing the structural requirements for completion of a program in terms of the number of compulsory points to be taken at any year level or in terms of the progression requirements from year to year;
• changing more 25% of the compulsory subjects in any year of any program;
• changing the configuration of compulsory and elective points in any program
• changing the mode of delivery of the entire program;
• changing the configuration of contributions from different disciplines to a University Breadth Subject;
• introduction of a Work Experience in Industry (WEI) subject; or
• amendment to an award descriptor information for AHEGS.

Mark
Numeric figure (e.g. 75%) expressing the result for each subject in percentage terms. See also Grade.

Marking
Act of assessing individual Assessment Components, generating a score and/or Grade, and feedback, as appropriate.

Maximum Course Duration
Maximum number of years allowed for completion of a course including full/part-time enrolment, Leave of Absence, other gaps in enrolment and Credit. See also Actual Course Duration, Normal Course Duration.

Minor
A defined sequence of subjects within an award course, generally comprising fewer points than a Major (only available within the Bachelor of Arts). See also Major.

Nested Program
A sequence of courses that form stages in the highest available award. Each stage may operate as an entry and exit point. These differ from articulation arrangements in that the pathways are purposely designed to enable explicit articulation pathways and the nested programs encompass more than one AQF qualification level and/or qualification type/and/or education and training sector.

Non-Award Course
A program of study which does not lead to an award of the University and which comprises a subject or subject(s) which:
• is from an award course or courses at the University; and
• is able to be counted as credit towards an award course at the University by students who successfully complete the subject or subjects; or
• may be used to meet the entry requirements for a course.

Non-Standard Teaching Period
A defined Teaching Period other than those defined as Standard Teaching Periods. See also Standard Teaching Period.

Normal Course Duration
The years of study expected for completion of a particular course. The figure may vary depending on whether it describes a full-time or part-time program and does not include Leave of Absence. See also Actual Course Duration, Maximum Course Duration.

Objectives
Statements of what students are expected to learn in a subject or course.

Ongoing
A situation or attribute that results in Academic Disadvantage likely to last beyond six months.

Open Book Examination
An Examination where the student may bring to the Examination and refer to text books, notes and other material in order to complete the Examination. See also Take Home Examination.

Oral Examination
An Examination which the student is required to answer verbally.

Over-Enrolment
Points undertaken within the course but beyond the number of points normally required for completion of that course.

Overload
A study load of at least 12.5 points more than the full Study Load for any Teaching Period.
